FIRO-B Team Building and Team Development Workshop

Do the following remind you of what you experience in your teams?

  • Capacity to talk and joke with others, desire for group/team projects, taking initiative to introduce people and find out what others think (this is an eg of high Expressed Inclusion)
  • Preference for written communication vs. face-to-face, desire to keep a low profile, selective about how much contact they have with others (this is an example of low Expressed Inclusion)
  • Selective about accepting invitations from others, little need to be noticed, discomfort when colleagues share too much personal information (this is an eg of low Wanted Inclusion)

FIRO-B Team Building and Leadership Building Tool:

The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation Behavior™ (FIRO-B®) assessment helps answer questions relating to teamwork and leadership potential. The FIRO-B® assessment can be used to nurture highly effective teams by helping team members discover how their needs for inclusion, control, and affection affect their team’s success.

How can the FIRO-B® help you?

FIRO-B® provides a simple and powerful framework to help individuals understand the interpersonal needs we all have within our relationships.

FIRO-B Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation Behavior Assessment Tool

The FIRO-B® assessment measures;

  • Involvement: Inclusion, participation, recognition, belonging, and how a person relates to groups.
  • Influence: Control, leadership, responsibility, and decision-making authority.
  • Connection: Warmth, understanding, closeness, openness, and how a person relates to other individuals.

As a tool, the FIRO-B® personality assessment can help teams to:

      • Build productive relationships in the early stages of team formation – ideal for critical teams where high-performance is needed from the get-go.
      • Understand (and work through) the causes of interpersonal conflict and team dysfunction.
      • Accelerate team performance – going from good to great in your team relationships. Perhaps you have already done something like the MBTI® and are looking to deepen the connections within the team.
      • We design and deliver interactive FIRO-B® team-building workshops, team away-days, and FIRO-B® training courses for groups, teams, and leaders.
      • We deliver our FIRO-B® programmes virtually / online, and in-person to include Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, China and Vietnam. We deliver training in Singapore and internationally. We can travel to your country or for Singapore teams heading to overseas countries for offsite team development or offsite team building.
      • Our FIRO-B® team-building workshops are also suitable for newly formed teams and for the development of more mature teams.
      • We are team-building specialists. With 9 years of delivering personality-based programmes, we are certified to use the FIRO-B® personality instrument.

What is the FIRO-B® personality assessment?

The FIRO-B® (or Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Orientation – Behaviour) personality assessment was developed by psychologist, William Schutz, and his research into high-performance teams operating in close-quarter settings.

The FIRO-B® instrument is built on the theory that when interacting with others, people have three important needs that must be met – that these needs are as fundamental as food and water. Not only do we all have different points at which these needs get met, but these fundamental needs also drive our behaviour in our interactions with others. These three needs are:

      1. The need for Inclusion – participation and inclusion in groups
      2. The need for Control – seeking influence, leadership, and responsibility
      3. The need for Affection – the depth of rapport in our relationships

For each of the above needs, the FIRO-B® examines 2 ways in which these needs get met; firstly, how we express the need through outward behaviour i.e. how we engage with others (called expressed behaviour); and secondly, how we want others to behave towards us (called wanted behaviour).

      Here are some helpful explanations:

      • Expressed Inclusion: The extent you go out of your way to get people to participate in something
      • Wanted Inclusion: How much you expect others to involve you in what they’re doing
      • Expressed Control: The extent to which you want to influence people, situations, and outcomes
      • Wanted Control: The level of Control and direction you hope to get (or not get) from others
      • Expressed Affection: The extent to which you try to connect with and show warmth to others
      • Wanted Affection: How much you expect others to try to connect with and show warmth to you

The FIRO-B® provides individuals and teams with a simple and proven framework to understand and meet the differing needs in our relationships.
